New bagel shop warms up for late August opening

Karen Aghabekian plans to open a new venture in East Meadow, just a few minutes’ drive from Hewlett, in late August. It will feature bagels made using her own recipe and a wide variety of other items, so no doubt she is using flyer printing and poster printing to let those in the local and surrounding communities know of her new shop, which will be called ‘A Bagel & A Shmeer’.
Aghabekian said she decided on the location because of the quaint feel of the community and, as a resident, to be able to give back to the town what it has already given to herself and her children.
Aghabekian will sell not only the standard items that one would find in a bagel store, such as veggie salads and lox, but over a dozen homemade ‘shmeers’ or spreads, including biscotti almond cream and spicy chipotle, flavored butters, and yogurt and humus spreads. The shmeers will use light cream cheese so as to be able to bring out the flavor of what is added to it. Also available at the shop will be paninis, cold cuts and breakfast sandwiches, and a menu for children. This will include mini bagels and spreads, such as peanut butter and jelly.
The restaurateur also plans to involve her customers in the new shop. There will be a tasting station at which customers can sample specials and let Aghabekian know what takes their fancy, as well as a monthly contest.
