Human polar bears on New Year’s Day

December 17, 2012 by

If the winter is not cold enough, winter-loving locals can get a little colder on New Year’s Day with the Polar Bear Swim in the village of Northport, Steers Beech, 2 Steers Avenue.

This event is free for anyone who can brave the frigid waters of Northport Bay. This event will raise funds for the Northport Food Pantry and will take place at noon. The event is sponsored by the Northport Fire Department Smokeaters and Boy Scout Troop 410.

Another fundraiser is being held before that, however, as a benefit is held to raise money for victims of hurricane Sandy tomorrow evening. Holiday Sandy Cares will be held at 7:00 pm on December 18 at Pepela, 104E 30th Street in New York.

The event will be hosted by actress Tamara Tunie from the movie ‘Flight’ and Erica Ferrari, a freelance reporter from CBS Moneywatch and CNBC, along with music producer Mike Jean.

Live musical performances include Rodrick Covington and Maiysha, who was nominated for a Grammy award. A silent auction that evening will feature items from Michael Jackson, Frantz Jean Baptiste, and William Quigley.

The guest of honor is child advocate and humanitarian Sam Childers. Tickets are $200 and proceeds from the event will go to the non-profit organization New York Cares, to be used to help those affected by hurricane Sandy to put their lives back together. For tickets and more information, call (862) 684-1107.

Non-profit companies often use community printing companies to print flyers and postcards to let the community know about fundraising activities and where to make donations.
