Hat’s that in Deer Park area

Deer Park residents may be interested in several hat making workshops offered at the Huntington Arts Council on over the course of this week.

The workshops will be led by Jenny Pfanenstiel, a Chicago celebrity couture milliner, who will teach the basics of hat making with a variety of different materials.

First up is ‘Blocking Wool into a Hat’, which will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on September 24 and 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm on September 25.

All basic hat materials will be provided. Participants should bring accessories for the hat and a sewing kit containing all the accessories they think they might need.

From 9:00 am to noon on September 25 will be a class that teaches participants how to work with horsehair, which is frequently used to create cocktail hats and fascinators for parties and horse races.

The next class after that will take place from 9:00 am to noon on September 26 and students will be instructed on the making of feather flowers, which can be used for decorating hats. Students should bring a hot glue gun and glue sticks.

The classes will be wrapped up with a session from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm on September 26 teaching students how to create abstract shaped wool hats. Participants need to provide a Styrofoam head, sewing kit, water bottle, large pins or tacks, and accessories for the hat.

The arts council is located at 213 Main Street in Huntington. New milliners can use brochure printers to advertise their hats.
