Queens gears up for boat racing
July 4, 2016 by Sarah
New York’s Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will be coming early in August. This will be the 26th year for the event.
Rowing teams have been practicing all through the month of June to get ready. Admission will be free and the event will be held rain or shine.
The opening day parade will start things off at noon. with the US Dragon Boat Open Championship Race following. Some new races that were added last year will include family, business family and municipal invitationals. Other races will include teams from healthcare, education, corporate, women, and seniors. There will be a media challenge, and a charity race will have a prize of $10,000 for the winning team’s designated charity.
Entertainment will be traditional music, dance, and multicultural artists from around the world.
For anyone who has not been to one of these events, dragon boats are brightly colored multi-oared boats from Hong Kong that have a double row of oarsmen – sometimes as many as 10 rowers on a side. The rowing is performed to the cadence of a person calling out, who is sitting between the rowers at the end of the craft.
