Fundraiser planned to help Newark families at Christmas

It has recently been confirmed that a fundraiser has been planned at the Center for New Beginnings, to help the shelter give the children housed there the kind of Christmas they deserve.

Since the shelter houses victims of domestic violence, part of the idea behind the fundraiser is to offer inhabitants at alternative to heading back to the sometimes dangerous and unpleasant environments they hoped to get away from in the first place. Toshia Hammond, a case manager, says the urge to do this can be especially strong at Christmas.

The idea is the brainchild of Samantha Brotherton, who is a representative for a company called Tastefully Simple. She and seven other vendors are banding together to raise funds for the Center, in an effort they are calling ‘Cheers for Children’. The money raised will go to New Beginnings, which will use it to buy Christmas dinners and gifts for the families there.

The event will be held this Saturday, November 23, at Buckeye Winery, which is located in Newark at 25 North Third Street. It runs from noon until 3:00 pm, and vendors in addition to Tastefully Simple include Mary Kay and Scentsy. The vendors will donate a percentage of their sales, and all the proceeds from a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle will go to the shelter as well.

Event organizers could work with a flyer printing company to create handouts to be distributed to the public in the next two days to raise awareness of the event.
