Beds and Borders Seminar available for Highland Park gardeners

March 19, 2014 by

Just in time for spring, Rutgers Instructor Bruce Near will be offering a two-day seminar entitled Beds and Borders over the next couple of days. Near teaches attendees how to organize flower beds to optimize bulb growth around their homes.

Highland Park gardeners are invited to cross the river to the Rutgers campus, along with others in the area, to attend the seminar, to learn how to better prepare their flower gardens in the spring.

Near will be covering site analysis, contrast, vertical versus horizontal garden planning, color selection, pruning and fertilizing, plant identification, and bed construction. The focus of the seminar will be on optimizing the year-round beauty of residential areas by orchestrating and combining perennials, flowering shrubs, bulbs, small trees, and annuals.

Attention will be given to creating flower beds with borders that accentuate the beauty of the particular types of flowers. Attendees may want to consider bulb selection if they plan to photograph their results and use them for poster printing once the bulbs begin to bloom. Time during the seminars will also be devoted to answering questions.

The seminars will be held March 20 – 21, 9:00 am to 3:30 pm in the Extension Conference Center (on Rutgersā€™s New Brunswick campus) 18 Ag Extension Way, New Brunswick. The registration fee will be $350. Parking is by permit only.
