March tip off for 2012 hoops in Fall River

A Fall River police officer who organized this year’s successful “Tournament of Heroes” high school basketball tournament said he hopes to make it a bigger and better event in 2012.

Bryan Nadeau, who organized the high school hoops fest, said the tournament is set to begin March 31 at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Nadeau organized the sports event to go hand-in-hand with March Madness, an exciting college basketball event that has entertained the community for years. Two of Nadeau’s fellow police officers, Michael Pessoa and Derrick Silva, are also assisting in the planning of the Tournament of Heroes.

To raise money for the event, Nadeau has been soliciting the Fall River business community for sponsorship. At the $200 sponsorship level, the name of the company or business will be printed on a team tee shirt. Lesser sponsorship contributions are also welcome, he said, or gifts-in-kind such as flyer printing, poster or brochure printing from local Fall River print shops. To date, donations have been “dribbling” in and Nadeau hopes that the Fall River commercial district gets on board.

Last year, $1,500 was raised for the Fall River Children’s Museum. This year, the goal is $2,000 with proceeds going to the Fall River Falcons, a youth football league, as well as the Holy Name School Athletic Fund.

Nadeau said that donations and sponsorship requests can be made by check payable to the Fall River Patrolmen’s Union, 685 Pleasant St., Fall River, MA, 02721. Contributions can also be made by calling Officer Nadeau at 508-951-1764.
