Popular supermarket coming to Burlington

November 5, 2012 by

Ground has broken on a new Wegmans Food Market – the third store to operate in Massachusetts.

The new location is in Burlington on Third Avenue in Northwest and, when complete, will be 135,000 square feet. Print companies in Burlington should watch construction progress because, once complete, there is sure to be a need for signage and banner printing.

Just over 30% of the store will have pre-packaged foods on the shelves, with space for a special section for wine, beer, and spirits, plus a café with 300 seats. Wegmans Food Market has earned a reputation among savvy shoppers because of its incredible selection of cheese, exotic and rare varieties of produce, and approximately 2,500 different types of wine. It is said that the store, spreading across New England, has almost a cult-type following.

The supermarket chain has agreed to a 30-year lease on the location, which offers 800 parking spots. The plans call for entry and exit points on Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue, or by using Network and Second.

It has only been a year since the first Wegmans location opened in Northborough and was greeted by enthusiastic shoppers impatient for the store’s arrival.

Wegmans boasts 80 stores in the eastern U.S. and has been heralded by Fortune Magazine as one of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ 15 years running.

Ground has also broken on a 70,000 square foot store – a smaller footprint and more compact, urban concept market and a departure from the traditional Wegmans Food Market, in Newton.
