A poetry reading took place at Arts Center East in Vernon on May 7, featuring Joan Seliger Sidney, the CT Poet Laureate Rennie McQuilkin, and Joyce Hida of Rockville High School.

Hida is a senior and was born in Albania. She shared her work describing what it is like to have immigrated to the United States. Her other works focused on themes like violence in the lives of boys and the growth of a relationship between a mother and her teen daughter. She is now considering translating some of the poetry from the four books her father wrote while in Albania before coming to America, and will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next year.

Sidney’s poetry was about sports as a multiple sclerosis paraplegic and those in her family who experienced the Holocaust. Finally, McQuilkin read poetry about a bygone era of milk delivery in his book ‘A Quorum of Saints’

The next poetry reading at the venue will take place at in a few months’ time on September 24, and the poets attending will be Victoria Nordlund, Sean Frederick Forbes, and Elizabeth Thomas. Those interested can find out more on the Arts Center East website.

Arts Center East could advertise the next poetry reading through flyers on community bulletin boards, or in local shops that want to support the arts.
