Chocolate saves the day near Middletown

January 20, 2014 by

Middletown residents who are yearning to take a drive, do some shopping, wishing to help the homeless, and craving chocolate can cross all four items off of their to do list at the same time this weekend, as the 12th Annual Chocolate to the Rescue event comes to the Water’s Edge Resort & Spa in nearby Westbrook.

Chocolate creations courtesy of some of the best area chefs will be on hand for guests’ enjoyment. Past events have brought up to 300 chocolate lovers. While guests satisfy their chocolate craving, they can browse an array of auction items while considering which restaurant’s chocolate concoction will receive their vote.

Last year’s event raised around $15,000 through admissions, the silent auction, and contributions. The event sponsors (Guilford Savings Bank, Edible Arrangements, Harbor News, and Citizen Bank) hope to raise even more this year to match the increase in Connecticut’s homeless population. Non-profits, like Columbus House Inc., depend on printing services to provide a significant portion of their advertisement.

Categories in which the chocolate will be judged include “most creative presentation” and “most amazing flavor”. A variety of food writers, professional chefs, and restaurant reviewers will be on hand to do the judging, while Jim Masters, the TV/radio personality, will be the Masters of Ceremonies.
The event, sponsored by Columbus House, Inc., is being held to benefit the Middlesex Family Shelter located here in Middletown and will be take place from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm this Sunday, January 26.
