While getting a spot on American Idol might be the dream of many singers, those in East Haven have a chance at success a little closer to home.

The third ‘Can U Sing CT’ contest will be in a couple of weeks at Cromwell’s Chicago Sam’s Sports Bar and Grille. The competition will be hosted by Jill Nesi, a singer-songwriter from Madison. Funds raised from the contest will be donated to the Sunshine Foundation, an organization that helps pediatric cancer patients by offering activities and trips. The organization could promote the contest using flyer printing.

Like singing competitions featured on television, Can U Sing CT involves a number of different rounds, including a final round during in which contestants are paired with a mentor. The contest raises money by charging those who audition a fee of $35. A portion of the audition fee goes directly to the Sunshine Foundation.

Past winners have had relative success with their musical careers; last year’s winner, Charley Tiernan from East Haven, has hadseveral auditions for Broadway shows. Another previous winner, Nekita Waller, is at work on an album. The immediate benefit of winning is a $1,000 check and the opportunity to record in a professional studio.

The contest also raises money by charging a small fee for admission. Those who hope to see the finalists on Febuary 23 will need to pay $5 to get in.
