Locals invited to take a dip for charity

February 22, 2013 by

A Polar Dip for charity will be held this weekend in Long Island Sound.

The event is to raise funds for the Connecticut chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Registration opens at 10:00 on Sunday, February 24, and ‘The Dip’ will begin at 11:00 am at Walnut Beach in Milford, a short 20 minute drive from East Haven. The goal for the funds is to find a cure for lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease, while also improving the patients’ and their families’ quality of life.

The money also provides free patient educational events and materials, local community programs, and counseling and research.

Registration is $40 in advance or $50 the day of the event, but entrants can also raise funds through a webpage. Anyone who raises an extra $60 or more will receive a free LLS beach towel. For more information, call (203) 665-1424.

If that sounds a bit daunting, families can instead make their own scarecrows at Bishop’s Orchards Farm Market, 1355 Boston Post Road, Guilford, on Saturdays and Sundays through March 3.

All of the necessary materials are supplied for the scarecrows. Other activities include face painting, glitter tattoos, and a free kids’ snack with each scarecrow. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Community Dining Room – a charity that services more than 4,000 meals to the community each month.

The cost of the scarecrows is $12 each or two for $24. The event is open from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm For more information call (203) 488-0447. Printing services can be used for a variety of flyers and postcards to let neighbors know of charity events like these.
