Medina, Ohio residents who enjoy musicals have the opportunity to take in one of the classics, when Highland High School presents ‘Brigadoon’. The school will showcase the romantic musical fantasy later this month.
‘Brigadoon’, which is a Lerner and Loewe production, was a smash hit on Broadway and features such songs as ‘Almost Like Being in Love’, ‘The Heather on the Hill’, and ‘Waitin’ for My Dearie’. The story tells of an enchanted Scottish village that appears every hundred years for a single day. Tommy, an American tourist, wanders into the town and falls in love with a local girl, only to lose her when Brigadoon disappears.
The show has been revived on several occasions, and a movie version with Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse in the leading roles of Tommy and Fiona was released by MGM in 1954.
The Highland High School version is directed by Christopher Ilg, choreographed by Jessica Franklin Slatkosky, and has Rachel Garmin in the pit. It stars Nathan King as Tommy and Annie Mizner as Fiona, with 27 other students taking on the roles of various villagers. Seven of the chorus members are featured dancers in the ballet number ‘Come to Me, Bend to Me’.
The show runs November 21-23, with performances beginning at 7:00 pm in the high school auditorium. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students, with seniors admitted free.
The show’s producers could work with a poster printing company to create exciting display materials to put in windows throughout Medina and the area, giving the details of the performances.
