Canton welcomes a new YMCA

Canton, Ohio residents have a new space to help them stay healthy, since a YMCA opened recently in the city’s downtown.
The Eric Snow Family YMCA opened on January 27 to replace a facility shut down in 2008 and subsequently demolished. The center takes its name after a native of Canton who enjoyed a long career playing professional basketball in the NBA.
Among its amenities, the 2,600 square foot ‘Y’ has a wellness center and gym, as well as a lap pool, sauna, and whirlpool. The pool is designed to accommodate families, children and seniors, while the two-story gym will provide a venue for sports. Meanwhile, the wellness center includes such attractions as free weights and cardio equipment, as well as a fitness office. A large, multipurpose room will provide space for classes that cover everything from acrobatics to Zumba.
There are five locker rooms in the ‘Y’, one each for girls, women, boys, men, and families. However, there is more to the facility than sports – other offerings include a classroom equipped with computers, in which students can complete homework and seniors can take classes. There is also a spot reserved just for the younger sector, with couches, cafe tables, and videogames available.
The YMCA could work with brochure printers to create a mailer inviting city residents to see the facility and join as members.
