A St. Louis, Missouri printer has been named among the top 50 private sector suppliers of printing services to the Government Printing Office (GPO) in 2011. Compton & Sons came in at number 31 on the list, rising from its 2010 ranking of 98. The volume of business done was $1.9 million. To put this in perspective, NPC Inc of Claysburg, PA, topped the list for the third time straight, gaining business worth $24.7 million during the Federal Fiscal Year, which ran to September 2011.

During the period the GPO awarded $331 million of work to over 1,859 private sector printers. The top 50 suppliers took $206 million of that business. The value of work awarded by the GPO to this sector fell for the third year in a row, though the market is still valuable, said Deborah Snider, president of Government Print Management, which helps print suppliers win GPO work. She added: ‘Having a secondary market as strong as the GPO is essential during tough economic times because it provides a resource for profitable work that will fill production gaps. The key to succeeding with GPO is knowing when and how to bid for jobs that will strengthen your bottom line.’

The other top 10 GPO print suppliers for 2011 included: RR Donnelley (chicago, IL); Sourcelink (Miamisburg, OH); Gateway Press (Louisville, KY); Monarch Litho (Montebello, CA); Cenveo (stamford, CT); Gray Graphics Corporation (Capitol Heights, MD); McDonald & Eudy Printers (Temple Hills, MD); National Envelope (Uniondale, NY), and Standard Register (Dayton, OH).
