New opportunities in Columbia as Walmart makes way

Despite news reports back in January stating the Walmart Express store would not be affected by closures at the time, the company recently announced the campus location has closed effective October 7.

Walmart Express at Columbia Campus opened in 2014, and was one of the company’s pilot projects started in 2011. The store occupied approximately 3,700 square feet was considered a “Walmart on Campus” location, likely making it a difficult decision for company officials to close the site. The store, which was located across the street from the University, offered convenience for students and faculty, especially those with limited transportation options.

Walmart will continue to operate Supercenters in three other Columbia locations, 415 Conley Road, 1201 Grindstone Parkway and 3001 W. Broadway. The company also operates a Sam’s club in Columbia at 101 Conley Road.

The retailer did not offer a specific reason for closing the store, but is working with residents to transfer prescriptions from the Ninth St. locations to other pharmacies. The company is also working with the 11 employees affected by the closure to place them in other jobs.

The location, 308 S. Ninth St, would serve as an ideal location for another business to resume operations. New businesses can benefit greatly from the services of a local print company, offering such support as catalog printing, logo design, and marking services.
