The 50th anniversary of Snowflake Days in Coon Rapids, just outside of New Brighton, begins this weekend spanning three additional weekends ending on Sunday February 16th.

No doubt the city is using a variety of printing services to let those in the city and the surrounding communities become aware of this event so as to attract as many people as possible.

According to Tim Howe, mayor of Coon Rapids and a member of the Snowflake Association planning committee, this year’s event is expected to be the biggest one in the history of the celebration.

Snowflake Days takes place at different locations throughout the city and has events for all people ranging from children to adults. This year’s celebration has some traditional events, some that have been revived from previous years and some new events.

This weekend features the Mayors Cup at the Bunker Hills Golf Club simulation center, a medallion hunt for the kids, a sock hop for the community, a family skating event and men’s softball in the snow tournament. The Coon Rapids Firefighters Local 1935 is sponsoring the medallion hunt and is also providing hot chocolate, opportunities to have pictures taken with the firefighters and a tour of their fire station.

The Shortstop Bar and Grill is sponsoring the men’s softball in the snow tournament which is returning after a long absence. The sock hop has been an annual event and will be at the Sand Creek Elementary School with concession and music by the Eric Christenson, a professional disk jockey.

The family skating event is new this year and will be at both the indoor and outdoor rinks of the Coon Rapids Ice Center.
