Used book sale held in Grand Rapids

August 20, 2013 by

The Grand Rapids Area Library Foundation recently sponsored the 12th annual Used Book Sale at the Central Square Mall.

The primary goal of the sale is for people in the community to purchase books and to raise funds for the library but it enables good will to be created for the library as well, says SusanHayes, one of the organizers. Many who purchase books often become patrons of the library.

There were many additions to this year’s event, including special appearances by Clifford and Cat in the Hat; the Clifford costume was worn by Hayes and the Cat in the Hat was worn by Wimmer. Children were able to pose for pictures with the classic character from Dr. Seuss and the big red dog. There was also help from the Itasca County Sentence to Serve inmates who moved 425 boxes in two hours and also assisted in the set-up and takedown of the sale. They were under the supervision of a sheriff’s deputy and were able to take back two boxes of paperback books for their work. In addition, more than 100 people volunteered to help out at the event.

Library collections and various programs will be supported by proceeds from the sale.

The event was organized by Cheri Stephens, Susan Hayes, Mary Jo Wimmer, Bonnie Henrikson and Kathy McCarthy. No doubt Banner printing was used throughout the town announcing the event as all who came and participated considered it to be a very successful event.
