November 10, 2012 by James
Volunteers were given the opportunity to celebrate achievements of 2012 last weekend at the Relay for Life Midwest Division Leadership Summit, held this year in Bloomington, Minnesota. The Doubletree held around 800 people who had come to celebrate accomplishments and learn about services and programs of the American Cancer Society. Local events celebrated include Daffodil Days, Relay for Life, and golfing events for charity.
Included in the Midwest Division are Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa. Marilyn Schreier and Sherry Johnson were representing Filmore County, while Lavonne Mensink and Sue Sikkink are this year’s co-chairs for Filmore County.
The afternoon session of the first day was opened by teenager Kari Liotta, a survivor of thyroid cancer, stating that purple symbolizes survivorship. Recognition was given to Johnson and Schreier for Major Heroes – their Relay for Life team which came in third place for fundraising among the four states. During the evening, Betsy Jo Kack was guest speaker, giving a talk about the effects of cancer on those with the disease and also those who are close to the individuals. Kack has survived cancer twice and takes part in the Relay for Life program.
The remainder of the summit included more inspirational stories and information, and closed with the message that human strength in numbers can defeat cancer.
