Celebrating 100 years of the Champaign Park District

November 10, 2011 by

This Thursday and Friday the Champaign Park District is commemorating its 100th year. Residents are encouraged to come out and celebrate.

For many years Champaign’s stunning parks have been admired by residents and visitors alike. So much so that the Park District has won the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Gold Medal Award a total of three times. From an awarding body that:

“…honors communities throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, and agency recognition…”

According to its website, this is very high praise indeed. Given the way that other things have changed over the course of this century, the staying power of the Champaign Park District is all the more impressive.

The celebrations kick off at the Springer Cultural Center at 8 a.m. where people will have opportunity to appreciate an Art Exhibit where local artists Regina and Christina Hinders will have their work featured. From 2-4 p.m., there will be tours at the Douglas Community Center and the Hays Recreation Center. After 3 o’clock the official Open House will be taking place at the Tennis Center. Here people will have the opportunity to see some quality flyer printing in the form of a ‘100 Cool Tennis Facts and Tips’ flyer before partaking of refreshments and enjoying the open scrapbook display.

Friday will feature an Open House at the Virginia Theatre for most of the afternoon followed by an evening of a cappella music. With this list of activities lined up, the Champaign Park District celebration is sure to be an enjoyable two days for everyone.
