On Sunday, July 15, the 2nd Annual Cardboard Cup Race will take place at the Sholem Aquatic Center located at 706 Kenwood Road in Champaign, Illinois. This event will take place between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

The people participating in this race will be required to design and build a cardboard boat, powered by human effort, which is capable of completing a lap and a return lap the length of the 50-yard pool. All boats will be made of corrugated cardboard, may not be painted, and all decorations must be added in permanent marker.

There are prizes for the winners, including a cardboard trophy, and there will be a first, second, and third places for the quickest boats. There will also be a Pride of the Pool Award for design, creativity, and the boat that used the corrugated cardboard effectively. The best looking boat will receive the Jewel of the Fleet Award and the boat that uses the Park District’s theme best will receive the Park District Pride Award. There are also many other prizes being awarded for most fun, best attired passengers, and most awesome sinker. Entrants at this event must deliver their boats ready to race. All races must register and sign a waiver before the day of the race. Aside from cardboard, the only adhesive allowed is duct tape.

Local print companies may have had a hand in preparing the posters and flyers for this event. Admission is free with the center’s paid admission or a pass to the pool. For more info, log on to the Champaign Park District’s website or call the Park’s office at 217-398-2550.
