Bridges to be built in Towson
July 18, 2012 by Sarah
Bridges 2012, a conference and art exhibition, will take place at the Center for the Arts in Towson University from July 25-26, running from 12:00 pm – 12:00 am each day. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Those who cannot attend or want a keepsake of the conference can purchase a book, an art exhibition catalog, or conference proceedings on compact disk.
The conference is an interdisciplinary one of mathematics and art. It will feature the presentation of papers, interactive workshops, seminars and talks, an art exhibition, a music night, a theater night, a movie festival, and a day geared towards families.
The College of Fine Arts is hosting an art exhibition which runs until July 29. It features 3D and 2D mathematical artworks, including quilts and geometrical sculptures. Awards will be handed out for Best of Show, Most Effective Use of Mathematics, Craftsmanship, and Innovation, these being people’s choice awards, and the winners will receive a copy of the exhibition catalog. It is likely that Towson printing companies will be helping by providing catalog printing services to the organizers of the conference, especially if demand for souvenirs is high.
Associations are rarely readily-made between mathematics and art but this conference will show how dependent the arts are on mathematics. Artists do rely on mathematical concepts such as ratios, proportions, and perspective to create more realistic paintings and sculptures. Bridges 2012 should not only be of interest to mathematicians but will no doubt attract many local and national artists as well.
