Bethesda area youth bands to compete for top prize

Hundreds of young performers from the Bethesda area are preparing to show off their talents at a local venue.

This weekend, the Bach to Rock Music School will be holding a Battle of the Bands event at The Fillmore in Silver Spring. Flyer printing has likely been on the increase as representatives from the academy continue their efforts to advertise the competition around the community.

Battle of the Bands takes place twice a year and usually attracts about 1,000 attendees. This weekend’s event will include separate contests for middle-school and high-school students. A competition for elementary-aged children occurred last weekend.

All of the students participating in Battle of the Bands are members of Bach to Rock’s B2R Band Jam Program. Every group will perform a combination of popular hits and original songs. Bands will be allowed a maximum of eight minutes on stage.

Several professional judges will be on hand to evaluate the musical ability, creativity, professionalism, and stage presence of each band. The panel will select one winner and two runners-up from each age division. The top prize will be the opportunity to record a song in a professional studio.

The high school-level Battle of the Bands is set for Saturday, January 11 and will run from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. The contest for middle-school students is scheduled for Sunday, January 12. It will begin at 1:00 pm and wrap up at approximately 7:00 pm. Tickets will cost $5.

The Silver Spring Fillmore is located at 8656 Colesville Road.
