Center City Project gets preliminary approval

The East Lansing City Council recently gave an OK to the preliminary steps in the Center City development project by approving the development agreement, the brownfield plan, and the site plan.

With this approval in place, the mayor will be able to sign the last part of the development agreement, according to an article on the WLNS.com website.

The project is designed to create retail space and housing in East Lansing‘s downtown area by constructing a 12-story, mixed-use building at the 200 blocks of Albert Avenue and East Grand River Avenue. The building would comprise dozens of housing units, plus a parking structure, and thousands of square feet to be used for retail/commercial purposes. Also included in the new construction would be a Target store, complete with a grocery. The project carries a price tag of $132m.

People who were interviewed about the development were largely enthusiastic. One said it would have a “transformational impact” on the area, acting as a catalyst to spur a revitalization of the community and increase economic development locally.

Another pointed out that the development would enhance the entire area, as well as bringing in many construction jobs during building, plus creating jobs for those who will be hired to work in the retail sector.

Projects like this can benefit if developers create brochures for potential tenants, both residential and commercial, showing the development’s amenities.
