London prepares for Christmas in October

October 4, 2016 by

It may only be October, but some groups in London are looking ahead to Christmas already.

The organizers of the annual ‘Randy Smith Christmas on Main’ Parade have announced this year’s theme, giving those who want to enter a float in the parade plenty of time to design and build one. The theme for this year is “A Night in Toyland.”

Prizes are available to the floats judged to best meet specific criteria. Floats can receive a maximum of 50 points and will be graded from 1 to 10 on areas including theme, originality, difficulty, appearance, and use of lighting (the more lit-up, the better).

To make sure that there is no bias for or against certain floats, the three judges will not be from London. Organizers of the parade can use marketing services to find the three out-of-town judges.

The city council of London has set aside prizes specifically for school groups. The award for first place is $1,000, second place will get $500, and third place will receive $250.

Other participating groups can earn recognition for best business participation, best youth group, and best decorated golf cart, fire truck or tractor.

Winning school groups will get a trophy and their cash prize, presented by London’s mayor, before the winter holiday break begins.
The parade will take place on December 2, a Friday, at 7:00 pm.
