Girls are on a roll for Saturday bouts

Entertainment rolls into the state this Saturday, August 18, as the Black n’ Bluegrass Roller Girls will take on the Burning River RollerGirls in a ‘Night of Roller Derby Double-header’ at the Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights, just down the road from Florence. The doors will open at 6:00 pm, with the first bout starting at 7:00 pm.

The night will begin with a whistle blow, where two opposing teams will take to the flat track. Each team will have four blockers and a jammer, with the jammer being the person with the star on the side of their helmet. The aim is to score points through a series of races. The only way points can be scored is after the jammer from either side has made it through the other team’s blockers, comes up on the blockers the second time around, and successfully passes each blocker, earning a point.

The race, or jam, will be stopped only if there is foul play and rules are broken as called by the referee, or if the jammer calls a halt to the race. Each jam lasts two minutes unless halted and, like in all sports, there are many penalties that can be awarded.

Tickets are $12 at the box office, $15 at the door, and parking costs an additional $5. Flyer printing and poster printing through local print companies may have been used to advertise this high-adrenalin evening of jamming to the public and surrounding area.
