Trees and walks offer opportunity for exercise

Nothing says ‘Christmas’ more than a freshly-cut tree, and a short excursion from West Sacramento to Red Feather Farms in Applegate brings plenty of opportunity to find the perfect Christmas tree.
This farm has 60 acres planted with over 20,000 trees to choose from. Varieties include Scotch pine, white fir, redwood, sugar pine and cedar trees. Red Feather Farms is located at 2100 Red Feather Circle, Applegate. Operating hours are 11:00 am – 5:30 pm weekdays and 9:00 am – 5:30 pm weekends. Other activities include hot food and drinks, covered wagon rides, a picnic area, and Santa is available on the weekends.
Following this, sign and banner printing may be out in force as locals are invited to start the New Year off right with an evening walk along downtown Sacramento on New Year’s Eve, followed by another walk on New Year’s Day hosted by the Sacramento Walking Sticks.
There will be two different walks, including a 5k and a 10k, that will traverse downtown Sacramento, the State Capitol building, through Old Town Sacramento. Walkers will enjoy Christmas lights and fireworks at 9:00 pm along the Sacramento River.
The walks are accessible by strollers and wheelchairs. Pets are welcome and there are restrooms along the route. The walk will start between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm at the Pioneer House and will end at 9:00 pm.
Pioneer House is located at 415 P Street. Walkers should bring a flashlight and dress in warm clothes. Refreshments will be served after the walk. Walks on New Year’s Day begin at 9:00 am and noon at Pioneer House and end at 3:30 pm. For more information, call Heidi Foster at (916) 792-1720
