The next 10 days will see a handful of interesting events for those with a fondness for art and literature.

Firstly, a lecture by Richard Foss on the ‘Legacy of Prohibition’ will be held at 2:00 pm this Saturday, March 16, at the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library in the community meeting room, 3301 Torrance Boulevard, Torrance.

This is a free lecture for adults and will discuss the period in America’s history during which alcohol was banned over 80 years ago. Foss will discuss the changes that occurred as a result of this legislation and how it has affected our dating habits and food preferences.

Foss is an author and journalist and is currently working on a book about the history of dining in the air. For more information, call (310) 618-5959.

After that, art aficionados will be able to meet illustrator Joan Magner and author Cindy Reid at a reception from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm on Friday, March 22, at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center and Preserve.

The duo collaborated on the children’s book ‘Harley the Harlequin Bug’, which teaches the life cycle of an insect. The event is free, although donations will be accepted for the Friends of Madrona Marsh. For more information, call the nature center at (310) 782-3989.

In addition, a series of photography classes is being held on Wednesdays through March 27 at the nature center. Aimed at rookie photographers, the cost is $79, and it is worth remembering that stationery printers can create beautiful gifts like calendars, greet cards, and postcards from images taken by amateur photographers. For more information, call (310)782-3989.
