Armed Forces Day to be celebrated in Torrance

The 54th annual Armed Forces Day celebration will be held this weekend in Torrance.

This celebration and parade honors the men and women of the military and will take place over three days. It singles out one branch each year to honor and, this year’s subject will be the United States Air Force.

The celebration kicks off with a free concert at 1:30 pm and again at 7:30 pm on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the James Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive.

Military exhibits will be available for viewing from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm at the Del Amo Fashion Center. Included are aircrafts, support equipment, and military vehicles.

The parade takes place on Saturday, May 18, from 1:30 – 3:30 pm beginning at Crenshaw Boulevard and traveling west on Torrance Boulevard to its ending point at Madrona Avenue. The military exhibits will be open from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

Side streets will be closed to thru traffic during the parade, so it would be advisable to arrive early to find a good parking locations and seating.

The celebration wraps up on Sunday, May 19, with a display of the military exhibits from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. For organizers, it is worth remembering that digital business cards can help nonprofits stay in touch with volunteers and donors.

On another note, people who love to pull weeds are currently being sought to volunteer at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center on Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings. Adults must be willing to commit to a minimum of 50 hours per year. To volunteer, or for more information, call (310) 782-3989.
