San Clemente residents to hit the beach for annual event

July 18, 2013 by

Beach lovers from San Clemente and other communities in the Orange County area will soon be flocking to the shore for an annual gathering.

This coming weekend, ‘The Greatest Show on Surf’ will be making its return to the city. Flyer printing is likely in greater demand as members of the Ocean Festival volunteer organization work with municipal employees to publicize this local tradition.

The two-day event will include paddleboard surfing championships, pancake breakfasts, fishing derbies, and an art contest. Another highlight will be the California Waterman and Waterwoman Championships. This series of activities and competitions will feature a 5K Beach Run and Walk, a one mile-long swim in the ocean, and a demonstration from a local body surfing club.

Children will be welcome to participate in the festivities, and will no doubt enjoy having their faces painted, making their own arts and crafts, and playing a variety of beach-related games. They will also have the opportunity to watch a hula performance, a Brazilian martial arts demonstration, and a ‘Mermaid Parade’ starring Disney favorites Ariel and King Neptune.

The festival will take place on Saturday, July 20 and on Sunday, July 21 at the San Clemente Pier. The activities will kick off at 7:00 am on both days. On the Saturday, attendees will be invited to stay until about 8:00 pm to enjoy dinner and a concert. The event will close after a 4:00 pm rubber duck race on the Sunday.
