Downtown Riverside to host education competition

March 20, 2014 by

Later this month, downtown Riverside will be hosting the California Destination Imagination Educational Competition State Finals and, as part of the weekend, Riverside residents are invited to events on Main Street.

The first night, the recently renovated Riverside Convention Center will present ‘Movie on the Plaza’. Throughout the next afternoon, visitors can enjoy the Riverside Unified School District’s Green-Screen demonstrations and the ‘Future of Robotics’ demonstration. During this, robots created by senior engineering design students from California Baptist University react to voice commands, dance, talk, and interact with the crowd.

Also during the afternoon, visitors will want to add their creative efforts to Collaboration X. This project, presented by the Riverside Arts Council, comprises two 4×4 foot walls on which everyone is invited to express their creativity in collaboration with others—passers-by will be able to watch as the afternoon goes on. The finished product will be available for photos for future postcard printing. The Riverside convention center will also host Taiko Drummers, a presentation of traditional Japanese drumming.

Destination Information is a non-profit organization that aims to equip and inspire students to become leaders and innovators. Teams of students take risks, frame, and focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) oriented challenges while having fun.

It all takes place March 28-29, at the Riverside Convention Center, 3637 Fifth Street, Riverside.
