Gardena hosts koi show

Residents in Gardena and the surrounding area are getting ready for the 43rd Annual ZNA Socal Koi Show. The two-day event promises competition, entertainment, and activities all surrounding the brightly colored fish.

The heart of the event is the competition in which judges will determine the best koi in Southern California. The judging will be done ‘English Style’, which means that every fish will be housed in its own tank and seen by the judges separately.

Koi will be judged by skin quality, pattern, and deportment (how the fish acts). Awards will then be given out to the winning entrants at a banquet at the end of the day. The next day, the judges will go around describing each fish and what qualities they considered when picking the winners.

Aside from the competition, the show will also feature a Taiko Drum Show. The classical Japanese style of drum music will take place alongside an expo with vendors and exhibits where visitors can learn more about caring for koi while also picking up some free promotional products. On the last day, an auction will also be held where bidders can pick up some high-quality koi of their own.

The ZNA Socal Koi Show will be held this Saturday, March 18th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sundathy, March 19 from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the Gardena Civic Center, located at 1700 W. 162nd St. Admission is free to the public, and the event’s website has more information.
