This weekend, Fremont gets festive as the Ohlone College Chamber Singers perform in the 27th annual Christmas at the Mission: How Hark the Bells at 8:00 pm on Saturday, December 15.

Taking place at the Old Mission San Jose, Fremont, Conductor Michael Morris will lead the singers in conjunction with the Celebration Chimes Bell Choir from Livermore’s First Presbyterian Church. Also performing will be Dan Levitan, playing the harp in ‘The Ceremony of Carols’ by Benjamin Britten.

Old Mission San Jose is located at 43300 Mission Boulevard. It was founded in 1797 and soon garnered attention as a place to hear music. Tickets are $10 – $12. For more information, call (510) 657-1979.

After that, there is a chance to get the New Year off to a fresh start with a butterfly walk at the Ardenwood Historic Farm, 34600 Ardenwood Boulevard, Fremont. The walk will begin at noon on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.

The monarch butterflies spend winter in the eucalyptus trees until the weather warms up. Using spotting scopes, guests will be able to see the beautiful butterflies up close. They could then use photos of the butterflies in a calendar for 2013 at a local print company.

Guests should meet at the Granary before the walk. No prior registration is necessary for this event, which is accessible to the disabled. To find out more, call (510) 544-2797.

Lastly, and making sure there is plenty on the itinerary this month, A Crabby New Year’s Eve event will take place from 10:00 am – 3:30 pm at the Crab Cove Visitor Center, 1252 McKay Avenue in nearby Alameda. Activities include animal talks, nature crafts, a nature walk, and a scavenger hunt.
