Escondido to kick off Amgen Tour

January 26, 2013 by

The city of Escondido has been chosen as the host city to start the Amgen Tour of California this year.

The race will begin on May 12, with this being the first time in the race’s history that it will start in Southern California. The last time Escondido saw the race was in 2009, when it was host to the closing leg of the race.

Volunteers are needed to help before, during, and after the race. Open positions include the volunteer committee, which helps to recruit and coordinate volunteers; the parking and ancillary space committee, which will manage the team, vendor parking, and venues for media; the hotels and meals committee; merchandise; community outreach and marketing media and public relations; events; gala committee; VIP support; sponsors; and the Lifestyle Festival.

On the day of the race, 400-500 volunteers will be needed to directly assist with the race and to monitor the race course. To volunteer, or for more information, call Michelle Geller at (760) 839-4587.

This is also an opportunity for community members and businesses to host special events in conjunction with the race, such as a fashion show displaying athletic wear, bike ride events, block parties, school assemblies, or other community events.

Events as large as the Amgen Tour require plenty of printed items such as forms, instructions, and history books of their previous races. A local printing company is a great resource for many of these items and also helps to support the local community.
