Son of El Cajon named candidate for football award

November 4, 2013 by

Those El Cajon residents who have been following the career of one of our own, Joel Alesi, will no doubt want to mark two particular November dates on their calendars.

This is with regard to the 2013 Ray Guy Award, for which Alesi is a nominee. His inclusion for the title of top punter of the season was announced by the Augusta Sports Council on October 25.

Alesi becomes the fourth Aztec to be nominated for the Ray Guy Award in its relatively short history. The junior has punted 24 times, with only five returns, this season. His punts have averaged an impressive 42.4 yards, ranking him the Mountain West’s fourth and the nation’s 38th longest punter this season. His longest punt measured 56 yards.

Named in honor of Ray Guy, the NFL punter, the award came into being in 2000. Alesi is competing with 85 other punters, and the field will be narrowed down to 10 semi-finalists on November 8. If successful, he will then have a nervous wait until November 25, when the semi-finalists will be further whittled down to three finalists by Football Subdivision information directors, media representatives, coaches, and former Ray Guy Award winners.

Who will be able to add the distinction of listing themselves a Ray Guy Award recipient on their digital business card will be revealed on Thursday, December 12. The presentation will occur on that date on The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN at 7:30 pm ET.
