Space Center free during April week

The Columbia Memorial Space Center will offer free admission for a week in April, as the City of Downey hosts an event it’s calling the ‘City of STEM’.

The weeklong celebration of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math) is focused on the community, and during the event, residents will be able to learn about STEM, thanks to the Space Center, which will present various programs throughout the city.

One typical event allows students of any age to take part in engineering design challenges, and to talk to rocket engineers from local technology and space companies including The SpaceShipCompany and Virgin Atlantic. Attendees can talk to people already working in the field and discuss career potential. People will also be able to chat with the experts on such matters as composite design and propulsion systems. This particular event, which is called Yuri’s Kids Event, gives youngsters a chance to learn what it’s really like to be part of the space industry.

Free admission to the Columbia Memorial Space Center, which is located on Columbia Way in Downey, is from April 7 to April 11. Yuri’s Kids Event is slated for this Saturday, April 8, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Center officials hope families will take time to come to the center over spring break.

Events like this can benefit if organizers work with a flyer printing company on a handout listing programs and where they’re taking place.
