On Wednesday, August 8, a Pops Concert will take place at Furman Park in Downey, California. This concert performance will begin at 7:00 pm.

The ‘Pops in the Park’ theme for this event is ‘Movies and Musicals.’ As part of the performance, segments from Seventy-Six Trombones, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Fiddler on the Roof will be played. Other pieces to be performed include the Prince of Thieves main title, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, and the Armed Forces Salute. This performance is sure to have the audience humming and clapping along, as many of the selected tunes are familiar to both the young and old.

The Downey Symphony features a concert annually in August and conducts elementary and middle-school programs in Downey’s School District. It also offer a Quintet of Musicians, with each person playing one of the instruments in the five major groups: percussion, brass, woodwind, strings, and bass.

This year’s performances are called ‘Style in Music’ and feature musical selections from historical eras and countries. This program is conducted as an educational outreach course and has earned many accolades. The Downey Symphony also performs three concerts annually, by subscription, at the Downey Theatre each year in October, January, and April.
