Community concerts on tap in Downey

January 22, 2013 by

The Downey Symphony will present ‘Simple Pleasures’ at 8:00 pm this Saturday, January 26, at the Downey Civic Theatre.

The orchestra is conducted by music director Sharon Lavery, professor at the University of Southern California and the resident conductor for the Thornton School of Music.

Performing in the concert is Conrad Jones, an award-winning trumpet player. He will perform a solo for ‘Quiet City’ by Aaron Copeland, as well as the Nerudo Concerto for orchestra and trumpet. In addition to classical music, Jones also plays jazz.

Also participating in Quiet City is Catherine Del Russo on English horn. Del Russo is also the Downey Symphony’s principal oboist and an oboe professor at Malibu’s Pepperdine University.

Tickets are $30 silver section, $35 gold section, and $10 students.

For those still hungry for more performing arts, the ballet ‘Hansel and Gretel Stars 2013’ will be presented by the Dance Co at 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 2.

This ballet of the classic fairy tale features original student choreography. Tickets are $18.
The Downey Civic Theatre is located at 8435 Firestone Boulevard, Downey. For tickets or information on either of the above events, call (562) 861-8211.

This follows Downey’s Unified School District presenting its winter concerts last week, on Wednesday, January 16 for West Middle School and Friday, January 18, for the Warren High School Choir.

Flyer printing is a great way to let friends and family know about events in which students are involved, and digital business cards could help keep all those contacts organized and fingertip ready.
