Music lovers in for treat at the Soka

April 9, 2013 by

Accomplished fiddler, singer and writer Stephanie Bettman will perform with instrumentalist Luke Halpin later this week at the Soka Performing Arts Center in Aliso Viejo, just minutes from Dana Point.

Bettman’s voice has been compared to that of both singer Joan Baez and vocalist Emmylou Harris. Her bluegrass and jazz combined fiddling has been inspired by names like Byron Berline, Johnny Gimble, and Stephane Grappelli.

Halpin is a master of the mandolin and guitar but also dabbles in the banjo, fiddle, and pretty much any other instrument he picks up. He has been inspired in his musical career by the likes of Mark O’Connor, Tony Rice, and Sam Bush. A singer too, he joins Bettman in several songs onstage. All seats are $20, and it can be heard at 8:00 pm this Thursday, April 11.

Poster printing might also be required this weekend, when music lovers can hear pianist Jeremy Denk’s solo piano recital at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 14, at the Soka.

Denk has a strong reputation as a compelling piano artist with a wide repertoire. He graduated with a degree in chemistry and piano from Oberlin College and Conservatory and then went on to acquire his master’s degree from Indianan University, where he was a pupil of György Sebök. His doctorate in piano performance was received from the renowned Julliard School.

Performance pieces include music by Franz Liszt, Sebastian Back, Ludwig van Beethoven and Bela Bartok. Tickets are priced at $28 – $38.
