Cool news for Carlsbad as new rink is in the works

For Carlsbad residents fond of spending some time gliding on ice, there is good news in the form of a new ice rink to be built in 2014. The company that runs the Riverside skating rink has sought and received approval to build an icy dome right here in Carlsbad.

Presently in North County, there is only one indoor rink and only four in the entire San Diego region. Ice for skating is a little more available in winter with outdoor skating available at the Westfield Horton Plaza, Hotel del Coronado, and Viejas Casino (Alpine).

Matt Dunaev of IceTown Riverside and his partners searched Vista as well as Carlsbad for a suitable location to put a rink. After a two-year search, the group settled on the former warehouse of a technology repair company. The 31,000 square-foot structure will cost somewhere in the region of $7m to $8m to renovate and is located near Palomar Airport east of Interstate 5. Dunaev anticipates the rink will open in June 2014.

In addition to about 25 hours of “open skating” a week, the new rink will also host hockey games and offer figure skating classes. Patrons will find a full-service pro shop, changing rooms, classrooms, and a snack bar.

New businesses like this one have a variety of printing needs. The same print company that provides banner printing for their grand opening will probably also have the opportunity to provide stationery and flyer printing.
