April walk to offer a breath of fresh air

February 6, 2013 by

The American Lung Association is hoping to raise $90,000 during its April 5K walk in Bakersfield. A thermometer on their website is currently tracking its progress towards the goal.

Anyone interested can become a sponsor or walker by registering with the American Lung Association. Donations are also accepted and 81¢ of every dollar goes to advocacy, research, and education. The ultimate goal is to find a cure for lung cancer.

The route is 5 kilometers or 3.1 miles long. Entrants can either run or walk the course. They can also join as a team member or can volunteer to be a team captain and organize their own team by calling (661) 282-3301.

Participants should bring the total tally of money raised either individually or as part of a team, water, and sunscreen. Pets may come if they are leashed.

The event will be held at Yokuts Park located on Empire Drive in Bakersfield. For more information, call Sheila Archibald at (661) 549-5271. Anyone who would like to join the planning committee can volunteer by calling (800) LUNG-USA.

Walkers can win prizes based on how much money they raise or they can donate the prizes back to the lung association. Flyer printing is an essential part of putting on a successful community event and informing residents of the details and is likely to be used here.

Registration begins at 8:30 am on April 13, and the walk begins at 9:30 am. The event is expected to attract over 600 participants this year.
