State Senator Emmett W. Hanger has been awarded the Champion for Children award by the Amerigroup Foundation. In addition, the Foundation gave a $1,000 grant to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in his name.
In giving Senator Hanger this award, a spokesman for the Amerigroup Foundation stated that he has had a ‘lifetime devotion to caring for and improving the lives of children.’ Senator Hanger stated in return that he was:
“pleased to advocate on behalf of the Food Bank and am proud to work with dedicated organizations such as the Amerigroup Foundation to help each child reach his or her fullest potential.”
The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank has stated that the $1,000 grant will provide 4,000 meals to children and their families. The food bank was founded in 1981 and provides food to over 100,000 people monthly in 25 counties and 9 cities in western and central Virginia.
The food bank makes it easy for businesses or individuals to hold a food drive in their community. They have provided a tool kit which contains a press release template and tips on how to hold a successful food drive. There is also a list of the types of food needed which can be treated like a flyer; printing this out will give those who wish to donate a shopping list to take with them.
The Amerigroup Foundation is located in Virginia Beach and is the charitable wing of Amerigroup Corporation. The goal of the foundation is to improve access to health care, spur on community improvements and to encourage healthy lifestyle choices.
