Roanoke first responders get set for softball game for charity

Roanoke, Virginia, residents can watch as cops go up against—not robbers, but firefighters—in a charity softball game scheduled for later this month.
This is the fifth annual game, known as the ‘Safe Haven Guns-N-Hoses Charity Softball’ event. This year’s contest puts firefighters from around the area head-to-head with law enforcement personnel and REMSI (Roanoke Emergency Medical Service) medics. The game will be held at Calfee Park and starts at 7:00 pm on July 20, but gates will open at 5:00 pm for those who enjoy pre-game activities.
Among the festivities will be displays of emergency vehicles and demonstrations by K-9 – all suitable for the entire family. The evening is sponsored by Safe Haven and its partner, WDBJ-7. Concessions will be provided by Pulaski Baseball Inc., and local businesses have donated door prizes to be given to lucky winners.
The proceeds raised will go to Safe Haven, an organization that provides a safe place for children to meet a parent from whom they are estranged, with the visit taking place under court supervision.
Guns-N-Hoses is the only fundraiser Safe Haven does during the year, and it serves to remind the community that the organization depends solely on donations from businesses, churches, grants, and the community to operate. It also reminds people to support the area’s first responders.
Safe Haven could work with flyer printing services to create a handout for game attendees, explaining the organization’s mission as well as thanking first responders for their service.
