Northern Virginia walks strive to wipe out diabetes

July 15, 2013 by

The Northern Virginia and National Capital Area Step Out, the walk to stop diabetes, are both taking place this October. Proceeds from the walk will go to the American Diabetes Society. Each area will be holding a kick-off party next month to encourage more area residents to participate; one in Fairfax and another in Washington, D. C.

The kick off parties will feature appetizers, drinks, door prizes, and several fun activities. Guests will learn all about the race and the cause and will be encouraged to register for the walk; those who are already registered will receive a gift.

The Step Out walkathon has become the signature event of the American Diabetes Society and has been taking place annually for over 20 years. Last year, 120 walks throughout the United States raised $120,000 for the organization. Participants register for the event and also solicit pledges from their friends, family, or co-workers.

No doubt participants will come from all over the area, including Reston. Local print companies will likely be helping by providing race packets and other printed materials to the organizers.

The Washington, D.C. kickoff party will take place on August 8 at the Carnegie Endowment Center from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The Fairfax party will then follow at the Old Town Hall in Fairfax on August 15 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Admission to both events is free.

As for the main events, the Northern Virginia Step Out will take place on October 12, and the National Capital Area Step Out will be on October 19. For information on either, visit the American Diabetes Society website.
