Enjoy Fredericksburg First Night

December 8, 2011 by

Like many communities in the United States and Canada, Fredericksburg will be hosting a First Night public event on December 31. The idea of First Night was first presented in Boston in 1976 and has been adopted by various cities. The idea of First Night is to provide an alcohol-free, family-friendly event to see in the New Year.

All those who wish to attend Fredericksburg First Night must purchase a button to wear; this gets them into all of the indoor and outdoor events plus rides on the Trolley. Buttons are $8 in advance and $10 on the day; everyone 3 and up must have one to take part in First Night. Fredericksburg printing companies have probably been rushing to create as many buttons as necessary for this event; ensuring that everyone who wants one can purchase one.

Events will take place all over downtown Fredericksburg and in Riverfront Park. The park will feature midnight fireworks and the lighting of the First Night Pineapple. There will be lots of events to keep everyone busy at First Night. Musical performers will include Elvis impersonator Michael Hoover, Sam 0, Hangin’ with Stogie and the St. George Jazz Ensemble. The Prism dancers will give a demonstration of Middle Eastern dance and American belly dancing. For the kids, there is face painting, clowns, magic shows and puppet shows.

Many times, New Year’s Eve celebrations can be very expensive and do not always include children. First Night helps people create a new tradition that includes everyone in the family; and does not result in a hangover the next day.
