Civil War Ball comes to Alexandria

December 12, 2012 by

The idea of balls as formal dances in which couples could be introduced to each other in a socially acceptable way in full view of chaperones and parents may not be as common as it used to be, but a local museum will show what it was like to partake in such an event.

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum will be giving classes in how to prepare for a ball and then will be holding its own Civil War Ball. The ‘Preparing for a Ball’ class will teach the dance steps needed for an 18th century ball and students will also have the opportunity to make a historical-era craft to take home with them.

The Civil War Ball will feature live music, period desserts, dancing, and dance instruction. The museum will no doubt be decorated to resemble a ball, which would have taken place in the Civil War era. Alexandria printing companies might be called upon to provide such decorations as banners and flags. It should be an enjoyable experience for many, as well as an interesting history lesson.

Preparing for a Ball take place at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum on January 26 from 10:30 am – 4:15 pm. Tickets are $6. The Civil War Ball will also take place at the museum on January 26 from 8:00 am – 11:00 pm. Tickets are $45 in advance and period costume is encouraged.
