Franchise Companies

What are Franchise Companies?

Franchise companies are businesses which sell their trading licenses, business models and intellectual properties to third party operators known as franchisees. This agreement between the two parties allows the franchisee to offer licensed products and / or services to their own customers, and run their own company.

A successful industry, increasing numbers are looking at running a franchise and enjoy owning their own business. A sector which is particularly buoyant is the business to business sector, which combines the convenience of a local supplier with the recognition and professionalism of a national brand name.

If you are considering a franchise, it is important to ensure you understand what is involved in their set up and management.

Investing in franchise companies

To enable a franchise to be managed, the franchisee has to make an initial investment. This allows for the business to be managed under the licensed name, and covers all training necessary to get the business up and running. As part of this service, good franchisors will also provide advice on the location of the business, to ensure the best chance of success.

Throughout the period of the agreement, royalties have to be paid to the franchisor. This ensures the business name can continue to be used and also ensures that the support and training facilities can be used.

Day to day management of the franchise

The secret behind the success of all franchises is the business model; which ensures that trade is generated and guarantees a level of service across the board. These vary from company to company, and can include price control measures and require certain services and products to always be offered.

Business models are not wholly rigid though, and there will most likely be certain areas which gives autonomy to the franchisee. Managing local promotions is possible for example, whilst all decisions over staffing and wages, and often the business hours of a company, can be managed directly.

Securing lending for a franchise

Another area where franchises excel is in the greater level of success they offer to their owners than startup companies. It is for this reason that they offer a much more attractive proposition to lenders. Once again, it is the successful business model which is key here, so its usefulness as a working document should never be underrated.

Many of the best franchisors can also help secure lending through an established network of contacts. Having a guaranteed level of service and having the ability to prove continued success, this can present preferential rates in many instances too.
